Why Commission Artwork Instead of Choosing a Regular Photography Session?

There is nothing wrong with having lots of photographs. In fact, every family should have thousands. Photographs document vacations, birthdays, holidays, milestones, and the countless everyday moments that make up a life. They are important, and every family deserves to preserve those memories.

A commissioned artwork serves a different purpose.

Rather than creating a large gallery and asking families to sort through dozens or even hundreds of images in search of a favorite, Heidi begins with the finished artwork in mind. Every decision is made with that final piece hanging on the wall years from now.

The clothing is selected intentionally. The location is chosen carefully. The lighting, posing, composition, and expression are all planned to work together. Instead of hoping one image rises above the rest, the goal is to create that image from the very beginning.

This approach changes the entire experience.

Most photography sessions focus on variety. Families receive a large collection of images showing different poses, expressions, and combinations of people. There is certainly value in that approach, and many families enjoy having a large gallery to choose from. We encourage our clients to incorporate these sessions into their family’s life, annually if possible!

Commissioned artwork focuses on creating something more enduring. The process is slower, more intentional, and centered on a single purpose: creating a portrait worthy of a place in your home. When a portrait is thoughtfully designed, artistically finished, and displayed at the scale it deserves, it becomes something more than a photograph. It becomes part of the story of a family. Years later, children may not remember how many images were included in a gallery. They will remember the portrait that greeted them every day as they walked through the house. They will remember seeing it displayed during holidays, celebrations, and ordinary afternoons. It becomes woven into the memories themselves.

That is one reason fine art portraiture has endured for generations. Families have always chosen to display the people they love most. While the methods have evolved from painted portraits to photography and now mixed-media artwork, the desire remains the same. People want to surround themselves with reminders of what matters most.

Photographs and artwork are not competing ideas. Both have value, and both serve important purposes. Photographs preserve memories. Artwork elevates them.

An extraordinary portrait displayed and enjoyed every day often has a greater impact than hundreds of images stored on a hard drive, tucked away in a drawer, or forgotten in a cloud account. One is viewed occasionally. The other becomes part of daily life.

That is the difference between collecting photographs and commissioning artwork.
