Frequently Asked Questions.

Heidi Knight Fine Art, Wimberley, Texas’s luxury portrait artist specializing in original heirloom canvas portraits.

Questions are always welcome! Here are a few of the things clients ask most often before beginning a commissioned portrait.

What Exactly Is a Heidi Knight Original, and How Is It Different From a Photograph or a Painting?

Great question, and perhaps the most important one.

A Heidi Knight Original is neither a photograph nor a traditional painting. It is a hand-embellished mixed media original that combines elements of both.

The process begins with a portrait session in which Heidi photographs a child, family, pet, or other subject, with the finished artwork already envisioned. The selected image is then digitally painted, giclée-printed on archival canvas using museum-grade inks, or, in select cases, on Italian leather, and finished entirely by hand with acrylics and oils applied directly to the surface to accentuate and customize the piece.

The result combines the accuracy and true likeness of portraiture with the texture, depth, and presence of fine art. No other piece like yours will exist anywhere else in the world.

Why Commission Artwork Instead of Choosing a Regular Photography Session Where I Get Lots of Photographs?

There is nothing wrong with having lots of photographs. In fact, every family should have thousands. Heidi's approach is simply different.

Rather than creating a large gallery and asking families to choose from dozens or even hundreds of images, Heidi begins with the finished art piece in mind. Every detail is planned around creating a portrait worthy of a permanent place in your home.

The goal is not to find one favorite image among hundreds. The goal is to create the favorite image from the very beginning, with thoughtful styling, beautiful lighting, intentional composition, and genuine expression.

When a portrait is carefully designed, artistically finished, and displayed at the scale it deserves, it becomes something more than a collection of photographs. It becomes a statement piece, a conversation piece, and often one of the most meaningful things a family owns.

Photographs and artwork serve different purposes. Both are valuable. One preserves memories. The other elevates them.

An extraordinary portrait displayed and enjoyed every day will always have a greater impact than hundreds of images tucked away in a drawer, cabinet, or storage box and rarely seen.

What Makes a Portrait Worthy of Becoming an Artwork?

A portrait becomes an artwork when it is created with intention from the very beginning. From the planning and lighting to the final finishing touches, every decision is made with the finished piece in mind.

Unlike a standard photograph, a Heidi Knight Original is intentionally designed from the beginning as a finished piece of art. After the portrait session, the image is artistically transformed, printed using museum grade materials, and individually hand finished with acrylics and oils to create depth, texture, and presence that cannot be achieved with a traditional print alone.

The result is a piece that feels substantial and unique rather than simply an image printed on a wall.

Heidi's goal is to create artwork that becomes part of your home and your family's story. Something guests notice, children grow up with, and future generations inherit. Not just a picture on the wall, but a striking piece of art created specifically for the people who matter most.

What Is the Typical Investment?

Because every piece is custom-created, investment varies based on size, complexity, number of subjects, and presentation.

Commissions begin at $5,000. A private consultation is the best way to discuss your vision and receive a personalized proposal.

Can the Artwork Be Designed Specifically for My Home?

Yes.

Before artwork is created, a conversation takes place about where the piece will live. That discussion influences decisions regarding composition, scale, lighting, color palette, and framing so the finished artwork feels intentional and cohesive within the home.

How Large Can My Artwork Be?

Artwork can be created at a wide range of sizes to ensure it has the appropriate presence within the space it is intended to occupy.

Many pieces are designed as statement artwork for living rooms, dining rooms, entryways, staircases, and other prominent areas of the home. Family portraits often benefit from a larger scale, while other works, such as a head and shoulders portrait of a single subject, may be better suited to a more intimate presentation.

During the planning process, the ideal size will be determined based on the artwork, the space, and the desired visual impact.

What Is the Best Age for a Child's Portrait?

Every age has something worth preserving, and beautiful artwork can be created at any stage of childhood.

That said, there are a few ages that tend to be especially meaningful milestones. Newborn portraits capture the earliest days before they begin to change. The sitting stage, after a baby can sit independently but before crawling, often reveals personality, expression, and curiosity in a way that is both timeless and endearing.

Around ages four and five, children are often in the remarkable transition from babies to big kids. The softness of early childhood is still present, yet their personalities, expressions, and growing independence begin to shine through. It is a fleeting season that many parents wish they could hold onto just a little longer.

Age thirteen marks the transition into the teenage years, while sixteen often captures growing confidence and independence. Age eighteen is another favorite, preserving the final chapter before adulthood begins.

While these milestones are particularly popular, there is no wrong age for a portrait. The best time is often simply the season of life that a family never wants to forget.

Can You Create a Portrait of a Pet?

Yes.

Beloved animals are an important part of many families and can be featured as a standalone portrait or incorporated into a larger family artwork.

As with every commission, the process begins with a conversation about the desired vision for the piece.

What Should We Wear?

Wardrobe plays an important role in creating timeless artwork.

Guidance is provided throughout the planning process to help clothing choices complement the mood, style, and aesthetic of the finished piece.

Clients are encouraged to shop specifically for their portrait session after the consultation and once the artistic direction has been established.

What Is the Deposit to Get Started?

Following a complimentary consultation, a 50% deposit is required to reserve a place on Heidi's portrait calendar and begin the custom artwork process.

The deposit amount and payment structure are outlined in the commission agreement before any work begins. The remaining balance is due prior to delivery of the finished artwork.

How Many Rounds of Revisions Are Included?

The design process includes review stages where feedback is provided before artwork moves forward.

The goal is always to create the right piece, not simply to move quickly, so revisions that remain within the scope of the original vision are included. Significant changes after design approval may be subject to additional fees as outlined in the commission agreement.

In practice, most families find that the planning process makes revisions minimal because the vision has already been carefully established before artwork creation begins.

How Does the Approval Process Work?

Family satisfaction is an important part of the experience, and the entire process is designed with that goal in mind.

Design proofs are provided for review and approval before artwork enters production, ensuring there are no surprises. Approval signatures are required at each stage of the process as outlined in the commission agreement.

How Long Does the Process Take?

Most pieces move through planning, portrait creation, design, production, and installation over a period of approximately four to six months.

For the best experience, conversations should begin nine months to one year before the artwork is needed, particularly when planning around a milestone, celebration, or specific installation date.

How Far In Advance Should I Plan?

The earlier the better.

Heidi accepts a limited number of portrait commissions each year to ensure every family receives the highest level of attention and service. If a milestone, special occasion, or gift deadline is involved, it is best to begin the conversation as early as possible.

Do You Travel for Sessions Outside of Central Texas?

Yes.

Travel for portrait sessions can be arranged for families outside Central Texas, with travel fees discussed during the consultation.

For families who cannot accommodate an in person session, artwork can sometimes be created from a provided photograph accompanied by a print release. In these cases, the entire process can be completed remotely from consultation through delivery.

Please see the next question for additional information regarding existing photographs.

Can You Create a Piece From a Photograph I Already Have?

In select cases, yes.

Allowing Heidi to create the foundational image generally produces the strongest result because every session is designed specifically around the finished artwork and artistic vision.

When a session is not possible, an existing photograph may be suitable for a wedding portrait, a cherished family image, or a portrait honoring someone who has passed away.

Submit an inquiry along with the photograph, and Heidi will determine whether it is a suitable candidate for artwork creation.

Can I Commission a Piece as a Gift Without the Recipient Knowing?

With Heidi's approval, yes.

When artwork is created from an existing photograph, the entire process can often be completed without the recipient's knowledge.

The moment someone sees the people they love transformed into original fine art is often unforgettable.

Artwork commissions begin at $5,000.

Will My Children Appreciate This Portrait Years From Now?

Many families find that these portraits become more meaningful with time.

The things we treasure often change. The toys are forgotten. The clothes are donated. Even our homes may change. What remains are the people and the memories.

Portraits become part of a family's history. They remind us what mattered, who was loved, and how quickly life moved. Heidi has never had a family express regret about preserving those memories. If anything, most wish they had done it sooner.

Long after trends have changed and milestones have passed, a portrait remains as a reminder of a season of life that can never be recreated.

How Long Will the Artwork Last? Is It Archival?

Every piece is created with longevity in mind.

The canvas is archival quality, and the inks are museum grade and engineered to resist fading for generations under normal display conditions. Hand embellishment is completed using professional grade acrylics and oils.

With reasonable care and placement away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity, these pieces are designed to remain as beautiful a century from now as they are on the day they are delivered.

Do You Offer Digital Files?

Each Heidi Knight Original is a one of a kind, hand finished artwork created specifically for display within the home.

The experience is centered on the creation of tangible artwork rather than digital products.

Can I Visit the Studio Before Committing?

Yes.

Meeting in person is often the best way to experience the artwork up close, understand scale, and determine whether the experience is the right fit.

When appropriate, consultations may also take place in a family's home.
