From there, the image is digitally painted and printed on archival canvas using museum-grade inks. Layers of acrylic and oil paints are then applied by hand, creating texture, depth, and dimension that can be seen and felt.
The finished piece preserves the likeness of the original portrait while adding the texture, depth, and character that can only come from an artist's hand.

A Heidi Knight Original wall portrait is the starting point of each portrait session. Albums and smaller printed pieces are available after the wall portrait has been selected. These pieces are often chosen for parents, grandparents, or family members who want something meaningful from the session in addition to the main artwork.
Only 6 Originals commissions are accepted each year, so each piece receives the planning and hand-finishing it deserves. Inquire early to discuss availability.

Long before I created artwork for clients, I created it for my own home.
As a mother, I understand how quickly childhood changes and how easily photographs disappear into phones, computers, and hard drives. I wanted something more lasting. Something I could enjoy every day.
That desire for my own family eventually became the foundation of my work.
Today, I create original portrait artwork for families who want more than a photograph. They want original artwork that celebrates the people they love most and becomes part of their legacy.

After the portrait session, we'll meet again to finalize the image and size. Once approved, your artwork moves through the digital painting, archival printing, hand-finishing, framing, and installation process.

Yes. Originals may be created in the studio or on location, depending on the look we are trying to achieve and the finished artwork we have in mind. The location is always chosen to support a timeless fine art piece rather than following current trends.

Every Heidi Knight Original is created individually, so completion times vary throughout the year, from about four to six months. During your consultation, Heidi will provide an estimated timeline based on the artwork you've commissioned and current production schedules.

If the photograph has sufficient quality and supports the vision for the finished artwork, it may be possible to create a Heidi Knight Original from an existing image. Because every situation is different, we recommend reaching out to discuss the photograph and what you're hoping to create.

Every commission is designed specifically for the ideal scale of the portrait. During the design appointment, we'll plan for the finished scope and size of the piece.
Heidi Knight Originals begin at 16×20 for a child’s head-and-shoulders portrait, and are available in custom sizes based on the specific commission. A three quarters or full length portrait will naturally be larger.

Every Heidi Knight Original is designed as a finished piece of artwork ready to be framed. Custom framing is available to best complement your portrait. Framing options are discussed during the artwork design appointment.

Yes.
Once your wall portrait has been selected, smaller printed pieces may be commissioned for parents, grandparents, or other family members. The wall portrait remains the centerpiece of every commission, with additional artwork available afterward.
You may also choose to commission multiples of your Original wall portrait at a 50% savings on the added portrait(s) when all are created together.

Heidi intentionally accepts only 6 Originals commissions so that every family receives the planning, attention, and hand-finishing each piece deserves. If you're considering a portrait for a particular season or event, we recommend reaching out early to discuss availability.

Heidi Knight Originals begin at $4,995 and vary based on several factors that are unique to each commission.
Scale is one of the primary factors. Some families commission work that spans multiple panels or reaches 80, even 100 inches in length. The larger the finished artwork, the more materials, time, and hand-finishing are required.
The number of people in the portrait also affects the investment. A child alone requires different planning than a family of five. Each additional person means more artistic time spent perfecting your piece.
Your choice of surface matters too. Most Originals are created on archival canvas, but some clients choose Italian leather, which has an entirely different weight, depth, and feel.
Framing and companion pieces (albums, gifts for family members, or additional Originals created alongside your main work) are also factored into your total investment.

Some families are looking for an unembellished photographic wall portrait. For those clients, The Heirloom Collection or The Portrait Collection may be the better fit.
